WMWFF Opening Film Announcement!

The Opening Film of the 24th Women Makes Waves Film Festival

“ She is Chavela Vargas, who felt like leaving this world every time she sang, and her music is the best possible reflection of her life of countless windings and shifts.”

Chavela’s singing voice conquers us right from the prologue of the documentary.

Chavela Vargas is known as legend in her home country, and as the muse of director Pedro Almodóvar. Her powerful voice and androgynous attire enchanted the whole of Mexico. Chavela was full of passion, she shared the bed of many famous women. Even renowned Mexican painter Frida Kahlo could not resist her charm. The fetters that tied her to her home were hard to sever, much like the ones binding Teresa Teng to her native of Taiwan.

Since the film premiered, Chavela has constantly won praise and awards at film festivals internationally, including at:

2017 Berlinale, where it won the 2nd place of the audience prize, category documentary
2017 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival
2017 Frameline Film Festival San Francisco, where it was centerpiece in the category documentary

WMWFF Opening Film: Chavela

Through its lyrical structure, Chavela will take viewers on an evocative, thought-provoking journey through the iconoclastic life of game-changing artist Chavela Vargas. Centered around never-before-seen interview footage of Chavela shot 20 years before her death in 2012, and guided by the stories in Chavela's songs, and the myths and tales others have told about her – as well as those she spread about herself – the film weaves an arresting portrait of a woman who dared to dress, speak, sing, and dream her unique life into being.
