Refahmation

Nicola AWANG 2016 Canada Experimental color 7min non-dialogue HDCAM
Refahmation is a performance work on the deconstruction of colonialized bodies. Nicola Awang's video explores the interrelations between self-love, identity in the age of the diaspora, decolonizing oneself and, most importantly, black hair and the projected black female form. The film is the result of the artists' own self-discovery and her personal journey navigating through oppressive and repressive paradigms.
