Emily Dickinson: a Certain Slant of Light

Bayley Silleck 1977 USA Documentary color 30min English Betacam
Considered one of the greatest American poets of 19th Century, Emily Dickinson retain a special status in the pantheon of literature. She was born in Amherst, Massachusetts to a very prominent family, and aside from attending Amherst College, a school co-founded by her grandfather, she would rarely venture far from home, living relative seclusion. Her private life remains shrouded in mystery to this day, and even her contemporaries knew little of her. Only a very small number of her poems were published during her lifetime despite the fact that she produced nearly 1800 poems and various letters, and these were published anonymously no less. The Civil War was a particularly prolific time for her as the tragic conflict inspired her to produce several hundred poems a year. Throughout Emily's work, her unique style and use of language are instantly recognizable, and her works the majority of which was posthumously published has been embraced the world over.
