The First Time I Was Twenty

Lorraine Lèvy 2004 France Fiction color 93min French 35mm
The First Time I Was Twenty, staring Marilou Berry (Look At Me) as sixteen year-old Hannah, is a sweet, ugly duckling story about the hurdles of growing up. Set in 1960s post-war France and based on the book The First Time I Was 16, this is the debut film for French director Lorraine Lèvy. With two beautiful sisters, life is hard for chubby sixteen year-old Hannah.

Despite her awkward appearance, Hannah is a feisty and exceptionally gifted bass player, determined to join the school’s all-male jazz band. She is ridiculed and rejected several times before eventually being accepted into the band, only to have to put up with the boys’ constant teasing and practical jokes, intended to force her to quit. Hannah’s perseverance and ballsy attitude win the boys over in the end, and she is acknowledged as a respected member of the band and one of the boys.
