The Lost Youth: Women and Industrial Work in Taiwan

The Lost Youth: Women and Industrial Work in Taiwan is a documentary based on the history of the 60’s woman-workers of Taiwan. Through interviews with senior woman-workers portrays the change and impact of the exporting processing zone on Taiwan’s economic development and female working rights as well as life stories for the past forty years.
On Dec. 3, 1966, the first EPZ of Taiwan and of the world was founded at Cienjhen, Kaohsiung. Girls at age 15 or 16 entered the large processing zone where they had never seen. The establishment of the EPZ embarked the age of light industries and it was also the beginning of Taiwan’s woman- workers’ history. They spend their youth working on the production line full of rumbling noises of machines and their efforts created incredibly large volume of exports and production. For the past 40-plus years, they have witnessed the social change and gone through vicissitudes.

Wan-Ching KE

Wan-Ching KE has obtained her MFA degree from the department of Film and Media Arts at Temple University in 2005. She was a reporter before pursuing her career as a lmmaker. She personally is concerned about the issues of labor, woman’s rights, culture, and environmental protection. Currently she is teaching in the Department of Communication Arts at Wenzao Urusline College of Languages.
