    One Sings, the Other Doesn't

    In 1962, in Paris, two girls become friends. 17-year-old Pauline is a college student from a middle-class family. She is rebellious and full of energy, and she dreams of leaving home and becoming a singer. On the other hand, her friend, 22-year-old Suzanne is a country girl with two illegitimate children and another on the way, who she is unable to support. While Suzanne is going through the toughness of being a woman, Pauline lends her some money for an illegal abortion. Later, they strive for their lives respectively. After ten years, they reunite in a protest march in Bobigny, in the suburbs of Paris. As they renew their friendship, they tell each other of the journeys of self-discovery each has been on in the intervening years. Agnès Varda shows the transformation from girl to womanhood, and the film also reminds us the charming moments during the 60's feminism movement in France.

    Agnès VARDA

    Born in 1928 in Brussels, Belgium, she first worked as a photographical reporter. She stepped into filmmaking with her first feature La Pointe Courte, and then kept making films for more than 40 years. She is known as a leader of the French New Waves and one of the most important female directors in the world. Her works usually reveal a passion for life, sometimes with an experimental narration, sometimes with gentleness, openness, and boldness. Her most wellknown works include Cléo from 5 to 7, The Gleaners and I, and Jacquot de Nantes.
