Le Skylab

Julie DELPY 2011 France Fiction color 113min French 35mm
1979. Albertine, 10 years old, and all her relatives have gathered in the family house in Brittany for their grandmother's birthday. This reunion turns out to be a crazy weekend of revelations, love and singing...Kids explore about sex with curiosity and excitement, while adults argue about their different political views. With the belief that a piece of NASA rocket, Skylab, will fall on France, leading to the end of the world, Albertine tries to experience this world until the last minute.
This nostalgic choral film is just like a French chanson, with a little taste of summer. As Jeanne MOREAU's Ni trop tôt ni trop tard, playing the audience travel with the characters back to France of the 1970s, when people were debating about death penality and colonialism.
As Julie DELPY's fourth film, Le Skylab has won the Special Jury Prize at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Playing Albertine's mother, the film contains memories from DELPY's won childhood. With so many different characters, she vividly depicts a colorful family portrait. Even though there are fights and disagreements, family is still the undeniable existence.
