    Generations is about mentoring and passing on the tradition of personal experimental filmmaking. 70-year-old Barbara HAMMER hands the camera to Gina CARDUCCI, a young queer filmmaker who embraces DIY aesthetic in a time when digital dominates the art domain. Shooting during the last days of Astroland at Coney Island, New York, the filmmakers find that the inevitable fact of ageing echoes in the architecture of the amusement park and in the emulsion of the film medium itself. Editing completely separately both picture and sound, the filmmakers join their films in the middle when they’ve finished making a true generational and experimental experiment.

    Gina CARDUCCI’s first film, Stone Welcome Mat, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2003. Generations, a collaboration with Barbara HAMMER, premiered at MoMA in 2010 and won the Teddy Award for Best Short Film at the Berlin Film Festival.

    Barbara Hammer

    Barbara HAMMER was born on May 15, 1939 in California. She received her BA in psychology from UCLA, and she earned her two MA degrees, one in English literature and one in film, from San Francisco State University. She is the pioneer of American queer cinema and recognized as one of the most influential filmmakers in the world. HAMMER is known for creating experimental films engaging gender issues, and she created many lesbian films in history.
