    A Brand New Life

    Young Jin-hee is taken to a Catholic orphanage near Seoul by her father in 1975. She was nine years old then. She refuses to believe the fact that she is abandoned and her father will never return. She tries to run away, even commits suicide, but realizes she could change nothing about her life in the orphanage. She finally accepts a French couple’s adoption for a better life abroad.
    The film is partly based on the director’s personal experience, and it owes its inspiration to the years from 1975-1976. During the years the director spent her time in the Saint Paul Orphanage in Seoul with the Catholic nuns. Changdong LEE is one of the producers, and his constant presence through the entire process of the film production and collaboration for rewriting the script give the director the reality and the voice of Koreans that she had been detached from.

    Ounie LECOMTE

    Born in Seoul in 1966, Ounie LECOMTE left Korea for France at the age of 9 when a Protestant family adopted her. After studying dress design, she worked on a numbers of films: as an actress with Oliver Assayas or as a costume designer, notably for Sophie Fillières. In 1991, she returned to Korea to play the part of an abandoned girl looking for her roots there. The film was never made, but reality caught up with fiction and she was reunited with her biological family. In 2006, she enrolled at the Femis Screening Workshop where she started to write A Brand New Life.
