    Rieucros is a small village in Southern France, in the Lozere region. In keeping with a law on foreigners, passed on 12 November 1938, Rieucros became the first internment camp in France. Undesirables were immediately brought there, such as foreign political exiles and German anti-Nazi Jews. At the end of the Spanish war a number of “Brigadistes”, Republican refugees, were also brought there. In October 1939, Rieucros became a female camp, whereas men were taken to Vernet, the most repressive camp in France. The first raids brought a number of German emigrant women to Rieucros. Arrested in Paris, they were mostly members of the Communist party. In winter 1939-40, women from 25 nationalities were interned, all of them deemed “Suspectes”, that is, held “responsible for France’s financial, social and political crisis”.
    These women will suffer hunger and cold and will live in terrible hygienic conditions; however, they will never be tortured or killed. During the day, these women used to work at manufacturing accessories. In their spare time they used to organize language courses. At the camp, they shared their everyday life with other women: shared the cold and hunger, but also a desire to stay alive and aware, to analyze things, and to confront with each other.

    Chiara CREMASCHI started working in cinema in 1990 as a collaborator of Lab80 film and Bergamo Film Meeting, and then as a script supervisor and assistant director. She directed several short films, and her first screenplay, Il cielo stellato dentro di me was awarded a Special mention at Premio Solinas and won the Rai International “Made in Italy” Film Prize.
