Christine CARRIÈRE 2007 France Fiction color 93min French 35mm
Life does not agree with Catherine, a rejected chubby girl who grew up as an unwanted child in a remote French village. She finds comfort in food, in working in the bakery and in dreams of escaping her hometown. Her parents do not seem to know what a heart is and her father can get violent occasionally. Her only hope lies in those big trucks zooming along the main road under her bedroom window, hoping some day, her prince charming at the wheel will dismount his modern steed and take her away. So she runs and runs along the road, in red shorts, too tight as she turns into a young woman, trying to tempt one of those modern knights. One night, one of them notices her. He is good-looking but Catherine soon realizes that he is also a drunk and a violent pervert. The dream turns into a scary nightmare... she is the only one that can save herself from a predestined fate.
The other characters accentuate the loneliness and cruelty in Catherine’s world, “darling” in the truck drivers’ radio communication network. Director Christine CARRIÈRE shatters a romantic myth, and from the ruins an option for a new life emerges.
