Facing Mirrors

Negar AZARBAYJANI 2011 Iran Fiction color 102min Persian BD
Rana, inexperienced, religious and bound by traditions, is forced to drive a cab in order to survive financially. Adineh, wealthy yet rebellious, has escaped from her home. These two women with opposite backgrounds and social classes are accidentally brought together to share a journey. Rana then finds that her passenger is a transsexual and realizes comprehending such reality is close to impossible, because it surpasses all she believes in and traditions she values. Set in contemporary Iran and as the first film about transsexual in Iran, Facing Mirrors is a story of an unlikely and daring friendship that develops despite social norms and religious beliefs. Even though Iran is a religious country, transsexualism is not against the law. On the other hand, the government even provides financial aid to those who do not have enough money to have the transsexual operation. However, transsexual people are still mistreated in this country, especially within households and traditional societies. The film courageously points out this phenomenon and tries to overturn the public's negative attitudes.
