Set in the near future, Advantageous focuses on Gwen, a single mother who works as a spokesperson for the Center for Advanced Health and Living and finds herself in danger of losing her job. That would make it impossible for her to send her daughter Jules to private school, a termed "advantage" i n this future soci e ty's brutal economic dispari ties. The Center's newest and untested health procedure offers Gwen a dangerous, life-altering chance to continue her career. To weigh her options, Gwen attempts to reconnect with an estranged relative and his new wife, but as seems standard for all in this dystopian landscape, Gwen remains alienated and alone.

Jennifer PHANG

A Berkeley-born daughter of a Chinese-Malaysian father and Vietnamese mother, PHANG graduated from the MFA directing program at the American Film Institute. PHANG's sophomore feature Advantageous won the U.S. Dramatic Competition Special Jury Prize in Collaborative Vision at Sundance 2015. She is also the 2015 recipient of the inaugural San Francisco Film Society Women Filmmakers Grant for genre women filmmakers. With the support from San Francisco Film Society and Sundance Institute, she was able to develop the short version of Advantageous into a feature film.
