An adaptation of Oscar Wilde's notorious stageplay, Salomé has been hailed as a feminist milestone, a queer classic and one of the first American art films to re-envision the biblical story in a groundbreaking way. Its status rests both on its Art Nouveau-meets-camp Aubrey Beardsley-esque style and on the legend that openly bisexual Nazimova shot the film entirely with an entirely queer cast.

Director

Alla Nazimova

Grand and highly flamboyant Alla Nazimova was one of the brightest lights on America’s theatrical stages and cinema screens. Her contributions often did not show in the credits and remained neglected.
