Mafifa

Daniela Muñoz BARROSO 2021 Cuba color 77min DCP
A female director with severe hearing loss is fascinated by Mafifa, a deceased female musician who excelled in male-dominated Cuban percussion but died young forty years ago. Despite her condition, she searches for Mafifa’s traces. Mafifa, surpassing typical biopics, employs an essay film form and conveys the sensory experiences of hearing impairment. Handheld shots, extreme close-ups, and blurred focus, combined with a dissonant soundscape, create a visceral, meditative impact.
