Tobacco Embers

Yugantar Film Collective 1982 India Documentary b/w 27min DCP
Tobacco Embers traces the history and strike actions of the all-women trade union of tobacco workers in Nipani, Karnataka in India. Attracted and inspired by the power of these large scale strike actions provoked by women workers and following the spirit of mobilizing for the left labor and the women’s movement, the collective spent four months with the women tobacco factory workers and collaborated with them to make this film.

Yugantar Film Collective

Yugantar Film Collective is India’s first feminist film collective. The all-female collective was founded in Bangalore by Abha BHAIYA, Deepa DHANRAJ, Meera RAO and Navroze CONTRACTOR in 1980, when India was going through a period of political transformation. Working collaboratively with existing or ensuing women’s groups, they produced four pioneering films and forged novel filmmaking practices, political vocabularies that still resonate today.
