Karen Berkman is an independent Australian filmmaker with more than 20 years' experience in television. In the past eight years, her company, Light Fantastic Films, has completed four full length documentaries. Two more are in development. Gone to a Good Home is her first work as director/writer for another producer. Before moving full-time to documentary production, Karen worked as a TV news and current affairs journalist for commercial news and - since the 1990s - for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. She taught TV joumalism part-time at Bond University for 13 years and now teaches one subject a semester at Queensland University. Karen continues to work as a casual reporter for ABC-TV news and current affairs, enjoying both the speed required for reporting and its complete contrast to long form documentary. She has written a feature film script and worked as director's intern on an Australian movie, Dear Claudia.
