John Fuegi grew up in London and Switzerland. The Wall, a documentary about artist Rico LeBrun, was his first film. Subsequently he co-produced the Beckett Directs Beckett series in Paris in 1988, and during the last sixteen years he has researched, co-produced and co-directed the four Women of Power films (listed below), for Flare Productions, which he founded. In addition to researching, producing and directing films, Fuegi is a writer and university teacher. His book Brecht &Co. was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 1995.
Jo Francis, born and raised in the US, began her career directing theater and teaching on the high school and university levels in Thailand and the U.S. She joined Flare Productions in the early 1990's and worked in Denmark with John Fuegi and Danish filmmakers to complete the first of Flare's "Women of Power” documentaries. Subsequently, she co-directed Flare's portraits of Virginia Woolf, Hildegard of Bingen, and early computing pioneer Ada Lovelace. She has also written, directed, edited and produced several award-winning short films including Journeys Close to Home and Falcon Love Story.
