Cheryl, starred by DUNYE herself, struggles to make a documentary about Fae RICHARDS, a black actress popularly known as the Watermelon Woman. While uncovering RICHARDS’ life, Cheryl experiences an upheaval which will soon evoke questions about herself and her future. Bitingly funny and deeply personal, The Watermelon Woman is the first feature directed by a black lesbian and is considered a landmark in New Queer Cinema.

Emerged as part of the New Queer Cinema movement of young filmmakers in the 1990s, DUNYE often set within a personal or domestic context. Her stories foreground issues of race, sexuality, and identity. Her feature debut, The Watermelon Woman, won the Teddy Award for Best Feature Film at the Berlinale in 1996.
