    Chantal Akerman 1972 Belgium, USA Documentary color 65min No Dialogue DCP
    A fragmentary description of a welfare hotel, from the lobby to the urban panorama of the top storey, Akerman's static camera seizes upon the head-on format to frame the entrance, certain corridor, and the interior of the lift to frame. The last long tracking shot that sweeps across a landscape where the tops of the buildings meet the sky was truly impressive. Hotel Monterey is a cheap hotel in New York reserved for the outcasts of American society. Chantal Akerman invites viewers to visit this unusual place as wall as the people who live there, from the reception up to the last story.

    AKERMAN was born in Brussels in 1950 and died in 2015. She explored women’s work, love, desire, and displacement. Her filmography numbers some fifty films and has been widely shown and acclaimed throughout the world. One of the most important and influential European directors of her generation.
