In Indian village Ujhaas, three ordinary women began to break free from century-old traditions that have kept them in servitude. RANI, married at 13 and widowed at 16, has as her life's sole purpose, raising her son, GULAB. LAJJO's tragic life is tragic because she is infertile and is abused by her husband. BIJLI, a dancer and a prostitute, is hated by the village women. Watching these three women is Gulab’s new child-bride, Rani's daughter-in-law, JANAKI. Before her marriage, Janaki had loved school, books and her friends. One fateful fall night, in the lead-up to the Dussehra festival, the lives of these three women intertwine in the sandy by-lanes of Ujhaas. What happens next changes the trajectory of their lives.
