The Housemaid

KIM Ki-Young 1960 South Korea Fiction b/w 108min DCP
The Housemaid is known as the most bizarre and modern realist masterpiece in Korean film history. The grotesque tale of a destructive affair between a hopeless husband and a young housemaid results from the sharp dissonance of natural human desire, the desire for ascent of social status—a chilling reflection of the social reality of postwar Korea.

Director

KIM Ki-Young

Known as the "ghost floating above Korean cinema," KIM Ki-young is one of the most unique auteurs in Korean film history and the manifestation of the spirit of an era. With unconventional styles, KIM creates grotesque tensions in his films that reveal hidden survival instincts and human desires.
