The Secrets

Ann HUI 1979 Hong Kong Fiction color 92min Cantonese DCP
The Secret is Ann Hui's directorial debut and the film that kick-started the Hong Kong New Wave. Based on a 1970 murder case at Lung Fu Shan, it is a bold experiment of visual styles and sound which breaks down conventional narrative structures and genre boundaries. Behind the eerie atmosphere lies the tragic social-reality of women at a time of social and cultural transition.
