Emily TANG 2001 China Fiction color 97min Chinese 35mm
Set in Beijing in the second half of 1989 six months after the Tiananmen Incident, this poignant elegy to youth and idealism depicts a student couple's winter of discontent, as the headiness of ideological movements and tje giddiness of love give way to harsh political and economic realities. Emily Tang's poignant and unbearably real doubt stands out in its pervasive tone of resignation and despair, that;s both characteristic of that twilight period of transition, and an intensely felt experience of what to many people was a momentuous point in history.
