Search for Freedom

Munizae Jahangir 2003 Afghan Documentary color 58min Betacam
Before the Taliban regime, Afghan women did not need to wear the wholly-covered headscarf. They were able to go to school and bring their talents into full play. Things change when the Taliban regime came into being. Afghan women try hard to maintain their self-esteem under the unfair regulations. This film traces the dramatic social and political history of Afghanistan from the 1920s to the present through the stories of four remarkable women: Princess Shafiga Saroj, sister of the beloved progressive King Amanullah (1919- 1929); Mairman Parveen, the first woman to sing on Afghan radio; Moshina, a war widow and survivor of a Taliban massacre: and Sohaila, an exiled medical student who ran underground schools for RAWA (Revolutionary Association of Afghan Women). These stories are the best testimonies of Afghan women's resistance to Taliban regime and their search for freedom.
