    The constitution of a country regulates the obligations of the president clearly, but it never lists what the First Lady should do. There is not a set of clear rules on how to be a competent First Lady. As a result, they need to set up their own image with great effort. What they do has to be beneficial for their own country and at the same time they have to keep their husband's political identity and image in mind. In one way, they are just like the leader of a country complete with nation-wide focus on them. In another way, however, they don't seize any power or influence. They don't hold their position through ballots, but there are piles and piles of obligations for them to fulfill. From France to Germany, from Mexico to the Ivory Coast and Peru, the First Lady of each country shows her own unique ways to hold this position. Some of their secret sorrows as well as joys will also be revealed in this film. Is the title of the First Lady a joyful glory for them? Their experiences will serve as the best testimony.

    Marie Mandy

    Marie Mandy was born in Leuven in 1961 and grew up in Africa and the United States. She received a Bachelor's degree in Roman Philology from the University of Louvain. In 1988, she graduated from the London International Film School, thanks to grants from the Belgian Vocational Foundation, and a scholarship from the International Rotary Foundation. She created her own production company in Brussels, Amazone Films, with which she produced and directed Judith (short, 1989), Pardon Cupidon (feature, 1992) and Madeleine in Heaven (documentary, 1999).
