Kim Longinotto Ziba Mir-Hosseini 2001 UK Documentary color 87min Persian 35mm
This film is set in refuge for girl in Tehran and follows the stories of five girls who come here. These girls, in leaving a situation that has become intolerable, show incredible courage and resourcefulness. The film explores their experience of male authority, their longing for respect and freedom, and their hopes for a brighter future. The centre is run by the dynamic and charismatic Mrs Shirazi. This film shows how Iranian women are learning to challenge the old rules, and how rapidly their country is changing.

Director

Kim Longinotto

Kim Longinotto studied camera and directing at England's National Film School. In 1986, Longinotto formed the production company Twentieth Century Vixen with Claire Hunt. Together they made Fireraiser, a look at the bombing of Dresden; Eat the Kimono, about the controversial Japanese feminist performer Hanayagi Genshu; Hidden Faces, the internationally acclaimed, collaborative documentary with/about Egyptian women; and The Good Wife of Tokyo in which they examine women, love and marriage in Japanese society.

Ziba Mir-Hosseini

Ziba Mir-Hosseini is an Iranian anthropologist who live in London she works as a freelance researcher and consultant on gender and development issues.
