    Kim Longinotto 2000 Japan/England Documentary color 106min Japanese 35mm
    “Gaea Japan” which is composed by the female wrestler (Chigusa Nagavo) in 1995. This Japanese female pro wrestling association has created many good records on the wrestling ring for many years, and has accomplishes many wrestler stars.
    This document is largely set in the training camp of the eponymous Gaea club, where aspiring wrestlers are supervised by the cool and sophisticated club president Yuka Sugiyama and whipped into shape by the pro wrestler Chigusa Nagayo. The film focuses much its attention on Saika Takeuchi, a whiny trainee who struggles to pass her final tests. How does a woman make success in this group and what kind of struggle she has in her mind? Though the wrestler in Gaea Japan seems to be strong and masculine, she is still one hundred percent woman.

    Kim Longinotto studied camera and directing at England's National Film School. In 1986, Longinotto formed the production company Twentieth Century Vixen with Claire Hunt. Together they made Fireraiser, a look at the bombing of Dresden; Eat the Kimono, about the controversial Japanese feminist performer Hanayagi Genshu; Hidden Faces, the internationally acclaimed, collaborative documentary with/about Egyptian women; and The Good Wife of Tokyo in which they examine women, love and marriage in Japanese society.
