早在1970年代美國女性主義運動時，蘇・弗迪胥就曾高舉「個人即政治」的標語，並成為美國前衛電影的領軍人物，也是酷兒電影中不可忽視的重量級導演。作品總是從個人出發，調性平易近人而創新，並以多元的電影詮釋語境試圖探討個人與政治之間的連結，主題圍繞女性、童年、家庭、同性情慾、歷史創傷及國族政治，並充分運用家庭錄影帶、拾得錄影、紀實影像等多元素材，親身實驗電影這個媒介所能展現的各種可能。其實驗性的創作手法和詩意的鏡頭，敢於衝撞主流政治和性別框架，呈現社會輿論、規矩、制度和權力結構中，複雜的女性主義和酷兒意識。其實驗性十足作品廣於電影院和大型美術館放映，2000年更獲頒Peter S. Reed終身成就獎。
