"What drew me to this project was the story of a Chinese-American lady I met in Boston, who later became one of my characters in this documentary. "I married four times in total, two Chinese husbands and two American husbands." I was shocked when I heard her experience under the social phenomenon of son preference, one-child policy, and the status of women. I wanted to know more about why they wanted to confront these kinds of uncertainty, challenge, and even danger. Then I started looking into other women like her. After listening to their stories, I had no reason not to make their stories into a film.
When I made this documentary, I felt strongly that I wanted to deep into their lives to explore their thinking, although this is a relatively private topic. I was fortunate that I could live with my characters while I was shooting and became good friends with them. I want my audience to start asking questions after watching it. Why did they decide to marry abroad? What force them to do so? What's wrong with our society? There are no right or wrong answers, but I believe, when people begin asking questions, society begins to change."
